Length?
[edit]For a truly painful(ly long :) ) list of cello (viola,...) repertoire, check google groups for the last year or so. I admit that I contributed. rec.music.classical and rec.music.classical.recordings, I think. Anyone care to contribute a section, or an article all its own, on instrumental balance - I've asked that already, though I know or think I know that cello balance is said to be a particular balance, with Brahms on hearing the Dvorak 2 having said-to-have-said that if he'd known one could write a cello concerto that way, (etc)..., or on the various reasons (there are obvious ones, and then there are the less obvious) why a composer writes a violin concerto and not one for (name other instrument here)? (Obvious: soloist who asks plays violin and not... but that gets slightly complicated too. Mozart, flute concerto in D.) (Yes, what of it?) Schissel 14:40, Dec 5, 2004 (UTC)
If there is no objection, I'd like to start moving e.g. the list on the main page (keeping the major ones, which is subjective...) to List of compositions for cello and orchestra to create greater proportionate room for something to be said of the cello concerto as a genre, its history, its balance problems, nexus points, ... itself. For which see List of compositions for piano and orchestra and piano concerto... Schissel : bowl listen 13:00, May 27, 2005 (UTC)
I added a link to the Bocherini Cello Concerto No. 9 In B-Flat Major, but the thing wouldn't link properly, so I had to put in a url vs. the article name. If someone could fix that it would be terrific. Nuclearmound 02:59, 15 July 2006 (UTC)Nuclearmound
Move?
[edit]I propose we move this to Cello Concerto, since it is "commonly called a cello concerto" and it might confuse people if it redirects (as it does now) to "violoncello concerto". Your opinions? — $PЯINGεrαgђ 03:47, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, and am in the midst of nominating Category:Violoncello concertos to be renamed to Category:Cello concertos at CFD for the same reason. Most articles in that category are about "Cello Concerto X by Y", rather than "Violoncello Concerto X by Y", and the main article is Cello, not Violoncello. Vivaldi RV409 Is NOT a "double" concerto for Cello & Bassoon
[edit]RV409 is a Cello Concerto, E minor, with String Orchestra.
- "The Master Musicians Series" books; Vivadi by Michael Tolbot: Appendix B, Catalogue of Works (Listed by RV number). ISBN: 0-460-02282-2
I have Ofrah Harnoy CDs which list a Cello & Bassoon Concerto as RV409. This is incorrect, and I wrote to them at the time to tell them; the re-release carries the same mistake. I can find no RV listing of a Cello & Bassoon concerto; this may be a new discovery or an arrangement of a Sonata or some such.
Consulting the Talbot book reveals only one Cello Concerto in E minor, RVO9. I have a CD with this piece played on it, Google "Pierre Fournier,Vivaldi Cello Concerto E minor", to hear it on YouTube!
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_compositions_by_Antonio_Vivaldi#Vivaldi_RV409_Is_NOT_a_.22double.22_concerto_for_Cello_.26_Bassoon For further discussion.
